Sydney CBD's best bar food
From sleek and posh to cosy and quirky, the Sydney bar scene has exploded with some of the best bars popping up all around the CBD. If you’re like me and need a snack while you settle in for a session, here is a list of places where you can drink and eat more than just a bowl of crusty wedges. Ash Street Cellar
This small but cosy European-inspired laneway bar makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a Parisian bistro. The menu is full of popular tapas and dishes made to share. For cheese lovers, you can’t go past the gorgonzola fondue or the wheel of soft brillat-savarin cheese baked whole and served with all the trimming, best accompanied with the gourmet cured meats like the San Daniele prosciutto and leg ham off the bone.
History the Morrison looks and feels like a New York style oyster bar and it has brought new life and energy into this boring, dead part of the CBD. Aside from the amazing décor, the best reason to come here it to enjoy their $1 oyster nights. Other must try menu items include the crisp lettuce tacos filled with spanner crab and the southern fried chicken ‘lollipops’ with chilli dipping sauce. Book ahead as this place is popular.
This basement bar has a surprisingly sunny disposition thanks to the Caribbean-inspired décor and fruity rum cocktails on offer. Keeping in theme, the menu is full of south-of-the border creations like the more-ish banana chips (possibly the only place in Sydney you can find these) which are homemade and the perfect combination of sweet and salty. There are also pulled pork tamales and the incredibly delicious Cuban pastelitos which are crisp deep fried pastry filled with sweet braised beef and raisins served with a guava sauce.
Rockpool Bar and Grill is home to arguably Australia’s most loved celebrity chef, Neil Perry. But he isn’t the only famous star that resides in this stunning heritage venue – the Wagyu burger is almost a celebrity in itself as it is always coming first place Sydney’s best burger awards year in year out. Rockpool Bar and Grill is well known for its fine dining, but the bar menu offers many delicious and reasonably priced items like fresh oysters, ceviche and beefy jerky.
This blink-and-you-miss-it saloon is a welcome change to the stock-standard corporate bars you usually find around the CBD. The basement bar served up craft beers, margaritas served by the jug and the cheap and cheerful food, especially the pizza slices. They range from classics like the margarita and Hawaiian to the gourmet like fig and gorganzola. Slices only cost $5 and are served until 2am.
